Rust is the product of the chemical reaction between oxygen in air and metals such as iron and steel. It is formed because the oxygen atoms (O-2) have a net charge of -2 and iron (Fe +3) has a net positive charge of +3. Therefore, for the chemical reaction to produce rust or iron oxides by oxidation, two iron atoms will react chemically with three oxygen atoms. The molecular combination will look something like this: (O-2) 3 + (Fe3 +) 2. The sum of the charges to the molecule or atomic combination is equal to zero, making it a stable unit or molecule.
