What type of soil (mulch, rock, etc., grass) should I use for a playground for children in my yard? I'm close to my garden area for a sandbox, swing, table and club house for my child. I will certainly take the grass. What should I use as underlayment?
I heard moldy wood chips. true? The sand is messy and a non-no. stones would be hard on the knees?
Give me some ideas.
You can get different kinds of stones and some of them are rounder on the edges. Like pebbles pond. They also have gravel is a very small rocks that are rounded like pebbles. Is this your son, like everything in his mouth? If you do not want gravel until it is over.
Wood chips can rot if you have lots of rain. It does not matter what you put in you need to add a few words each year due to get packed.
You can read different types of mulch, some dyes are off on your clothes, some of them repel insects because of the odor (ie cedar pine etc)
They also stop weeds that have mixed and it will help to kill the grass underneath.
This carpeted softy they play McDonalds gorund region. I think Home Depot or Lowes has them
mulch would be good. But you may get new each spring ..
They have rubber mulch now, kind of expensive, but you will not have to replace mulch others.

They have a great mulch for playgrounds, which is made from ground rubber tires. They use the parks for children here. It's good for the knees of children and a great way to recycle old tires.
The rubber tire mulch is best if you can afford. Otherwise there is a special wood mulch for playgrounds, which is more finely ground for safety.
I would like to use rubber mulch for several reasons. It comes in fun colors, it does not get ground into your shoes, like sand, it is soft to fall on, and the difference of gravel when the children throw it to another, it would be less damaging . The only drawback is price, but it lasted very long time, even with a breakdown of UV rays.
Yes, chips of wood can rot. That's how they break down.
Gravel, gravel can be very painful. I do not want to use for the area of a child.
Maybe just a layer of landscape fabric stapled down? It looks good in the nursery.
Check Home Depot and other places that sell garden supplies. There is a new product now from old tires. mulch "the company" sells tires and bags of 25 or 50 lbs. It does not attract insects, is a soft landing when small children fall and it comes in a variety of colors. I saw him last year for the first time to our County Fair. Good for the environment too, tire recycling instead of landfills.
